Meaning‑Aligned Requirements (MAR) Overview

Meaning‑Aligned Requirements (MAR) is the governed method for defining business requirements anchored to stabilized meaning. MAR ensures every requirement is built on authored, governed, and aligned meaning elements before design, vendor interpretation, or implementation begins. Traditional requirements methods assume meaning is already aligned. MAR ensures it is.


MAR provides the structural method that operationalizes Meaning Governance. It stabilizes requirements, prevents drift, and ensures downstream work operates on consistent semantics across teams, vendors, systems, and AI models.


Why MAR Exists

Traditional requirements methods rely on assumptions about meaning. Terms like complete, ready, aligned, qualified, valid, and acceptable are interpreted differently across functions, vendors, and systems. These differences create:

  • inconsistent requirements

  • vendor‑shaped interpretation

  • rework and escalations

  • misaligned acceptance criteria

  • unpredictable design decisions

  • AI misclassification and drift

These are semantic failures, not process failures. MAR stabilizes requirements by anchoring them to governed meaning before they are written.


What MAR Governs

MAR defines how requirements must be authored, validated, and governed. It anchors each requirement to:

  • Meaning elements   The governed definitions that shape decisions and workflows.

  • Conditions of Success   The structural criteria that determine whether a requirement is acceptable.

  • Exception classes   The governed categories that determine how deviations are handled.

  • Readiness definitions   The criteria that determine when a requirement is ready for design or implementation.

  • Decision boundaries   The governed lines that prevent reinterpretation during design and delivery.

MAR ensures requirements cannot drift, be reinterpreted, or be reshaped by vendors or systems.


How MAR Works

MAR applies governed meaning to the requirements lifecycle:

  1. Anchor each requirement to authored meaning elements.

  2. Apply Conditions of Success to determine completeness and quality.

  3. Classify exceptions using governed exception classes.

  4. Validate readiness using governed readiness definitions.

  5. Constrain interpretation during design and vendor solutioning.

  6. Stabilize downstream decisions, acceptance criteria, and testing.

  7. Prepare requirements for deterministic AI and governed autonomy.

MAR does not replace BRDs, user stories, or acceptance criteria. It governs them.

Relationship to Meaning Governance

Meaning Governance is the discipline. MAR is the method.

Meaning Governance authors and stabilizes meaning. MAR applies that meaning to requirements.

Without Meaning Governance, MAR has no foundation. Without MAR, Meaning Governance does not flow into requirements.

Together, they form the upstream semantic architecture that stabilizes transformation.
